Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What to Expect in Your First Counseling Session? The therapist may discuss:

  • The reason you sought therapy

  • Current symptoms and events that may have led you to counseling

How can I get the most out of going to therapy?

  • Be open and ask questions. I am here to actively listen to your concerns

  • Write down reasons you’re seeking help. This will help you and I work effectively to reach your counseling goals.

  • Be open and honest about your feelings. During your first session, many thoughts will come to mind. You’ll probably think your therapist is not able to keep up however, I provide a warm and accepting atmosphere for you to explore your concerns.

  • Be realistic with your therapy expectations. Deciding to talk to someone is a great first step in improving your mental health. However, counseling is not a quick fix for your problem but a process. With time and effort, you can develop a strong relationship with me as your therapist which can help you with gaining the tools toward problem solving.

What is therapy?

Therapy, also called psychotherapy or counseling, is the process of meeting with a therapist to resolve problematic behaviors, beliefs, feelings, relationship issues, and/or somatic responses (sensations in the body).

Dr. Michael Herkov describes therapy as a “process whereby psychological problems are treated through communication and relationship factors between an individual and a trained mental health professional. Modern psychotherapy is time-limited, focused, and usually occurs once a week for 45-50 minutes per session.”

How do I know if therapy is working?

  • Feeling less worried or down

  • slight lift in mood

  • feeling more peaceful

  • getting more rest

  • seeing improvements in your relationships, work, school, etc. You and I can work on markers of progress based on your specific concerns
